Do you want to pursue a career in design? If you wish to design the next legendary logo, redesign urban spaces, or create fashion that goes viral, your first challenge is the design entrance exam.

Let’s be honest: these exams are anything but typical multiple-choice exams. They require creativity, logical thinking, powers of observation, and the ability to turn a random prompt (e.g., “Design a toothbrush for astronauts”) into something extraordinary.

It’s more about innovative thinking, confident sketching, and an inquisitive mindset than memorisation. If you are confused about starting your preparation, then do not worry. Here are some suggestions that can help any beginner to start with the preparation.

  1. Identify Patterns

Recognize the examination scheme of each subject. Whether you are taking NID DAT, NIFT, UCEED, JEE PAPER-2, etc., it is important to know the pattern of the exam. This will help in customizing the practice and study strategies for the exam. By understanding the exam pattern, confidence is developed, which also helps in managing the time for the exam effectively. In addition, a more accurate exam pattern helps to identify the important topics.

  1. Hard copy of the Syllabus

A printed copy of the exam syllabus helps with preparation as it provides a clear roadmap. It also makes it easier to plan effectively. It also makes it clear which topic needs more attention. In addition, the syllabus serves as a checklist for preparation. It develops the guided syllabus for the assessment of results.

  1. Date Schedule

Keeping track of exam dates will provide a well-structured roadmap. This keeps alarming with the revision schedule also. Additionally, the date tracking strategy assists with proper timeline planning. Considering time is another important factor that leads to fruitful results.

  1. Previous year Paper

Solving last year’s exam questions boosts self-confidence. It constructively clarifies important topics. The tasks from previous years also make it easier to recognise the exam pattern. Solving tasks from previous years helps to clarify doubts.

  1. Subject Schedule

Give each subject one day until the revision date. Allow a whole week for revision before the exam. If each day in a week is dedicated to one subject, it will be easy to cover the most important concepts. This will reduce preparation stress as there will also be a week for revision.

  1. Regular Revision

No doubt, a whole week will be available for repetition, but it is more practicable if you do a spot repetition in the middle of the preparation. This will make the concepts more constructive and clear. Essentially, it is about the difficult part of the syllabus or the most technical part. This will build a strong understanding of the difficult concepts.

  1. Portfolio Development

Having a portfolio in addition to the exam is an important point. It shows the caliber and aspirational potential of an applicant. The development of the portfolio emphasizes the passion for design. It also complements the written exam with compelling practical evidence.
